The Data Manager app needs your data file to be a CSV that is UTF-8 encoded.ย

This makes sure that your data file is uploaded quickly and in a format that the app can analyse the data within and let you know if any columns contain unexpected values.

So, how do you work on your data file (tidying up columns etc) and ensure the final file is UTF-8 encoded?

Assumptions:

  • You can get your data from your own systems (maybe exported from your Student Record System, etc).

  • You will prepare the data file using Excel.

On Windows:

In Excel, when you are ready to save the data file and import it, click "Save As" and select "CSV UTF-8 (Comm delimited) (*.csv)".

Done. Your file is now a CSV that is UTF-8 encoded, and you can import it.

On a Mac:

In Excel, when you are ready to save the data file and import it, click "Save As" and select "CSV UTF-8 (Comm delimited) (*.csv)".

Done. Your file is now a CSV that is UTF-encoded, and you can import it.

If you notice something that needs fixing and open it back up in Excel, always remember to click "Save As" and select "CSV UTF-8 (Comm delimited) (*.csv)" afterwards.
