Step 1: About

Please see this article for the basic set-up. Remember to set the Touchpoint as draft in order to edit.

Step 2: Timing

This step will allow you to set when you want the Touchpoint to go out. You can set the Touchpoint to be immediate, or go out at a certain date and time. You can learn more about immediate Touchpoints from this article.

You can also set whether you want to include only new students in the workflow, or both existing and new students.

Step 3: Content

SMS content can support emoji, plain text, merge fields, such as an opt-out link, and other special characters. SMSs can be sent to both UK and international mobile phone numbers. Find out more about international sending in this article.

Please bear in mind that when using merge fields in SMS messages, the content from the field may be longer and thus you may use more of your Establishment's SMS balance to send your message. See this article to learn more about merge fields.

Long URLs can also take up more of your SMS balance, so use a URL shortener, like bit.ly, where required.

SMS are plain text, so you cannot directly add links. However, most modern mobile phones will turn anything that starts with HTTPS:// into a link, for example, https://google.com, but this does depend on the receiving phone.

Sender Name

SMS Touchpoints also have a special setting of Sender Name. This displays on the recipient's phone as who the message is from. Each Marketing Unit can have a different Sender Name.

The name must be between 3 and 11 characters. You can use standard numbers (0-9) and upper or lowercase letters (A-Z; a-z).

However, you cannot use spaces or Emoji. The only special characters allowed are as below:

-  .  #  !

We recommend using your organisation's name, or a contraction thereof, so that students know who is contacting them. For example New Forest University might use "NFU", "NFU-OpenDay", or "Admsns.NFU".

Step 4: Conditions (Optional)

You can use conditions to only send your Touchpoints to certain students. For example, you could send a Touchpoint to all students with the first name of “John”.

To do this, click the Plus icon and choose your conditions from the drop-downs available. Be aware that any dates must be formatted as YYYY-MM-DD, for example, 2019-01-01 for 1st January 2019.

For more advice on conditions, see this FAQ.

Step 5: Preview

Before you set your Touchpoint live, you have the option to review your work. This step allows you to view how your message will look on a student's phone. You can also put in a UK mobile number to see a live preview.

Once you are happy with your work, you can change the status to live. You should then see a green confirmation banner.

You're all finished! Your Touchpoint is live and will send when all conditions are met.
If at any point you need to amend the Touchpoint, you'll need to pause your workflow, and set the Touchpoint back to draft.  Equally, you may want to archive your Touchpoint. You can learn more about archiving Touchpoints here.
