What is a Ghost Course

Sometimes, when you’re setting up a booking form in Pre-App Open Days (POD), you need an option for Students who aren’t ready to pick a specific course. This is where a 'ghost course' comes in handy.

A ghost course is just like a normal course in the way you can group it, report on it, and use it with Course Groups – but it only exists in POD. It won’t appear in any other part of the system.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re asking people to choose a course in the Business subject area. Rather than forcing an undecided Student to pick one, you can add a ghost course such as: Business – Not decided yet

This way:

  • The Student can complete the form without specifying which course they want.

  • You can still use all the Course Group functionality as if it were a real course.

  • You avoid cluttering the rest of the system with 'not decided' entries.

Ghost courses keep your forms clear for Students, and your data tidy for you.

How to set up a Ghost Course

  1. Check with Customer Support to see if your Establishment has Ghost Courses enabled. If not, you'll need to request that CS makes this change in your Establishment's Admin settings.

  2. Create a new 'undecided' course for each Faculty or Subject you want your students to be able to select.

  3. When creating your 'undecided' courses, you'll see an option for 'Ghost Course' - make sure you check it.

  4. Continue with your POD set up as normal, ensuring the ghost course is included in each course group, if these are being used.

When the Student comes to select the course details, they'll see the ghost course included in the list of course options:

Depending on your setup, they'll see the same options as if they'd selected a normal course, and the ghost course will be displayed as normal on their Student Record:
